Final Project
The final project explores the ‘ridership success for the residents of Surrey and the langleys, and will look at how an extension to this approved line into the Township of Langley will prove beneficial to the growing population of the lower Fraser.
Project Management
- Vicky, Jassen and I all worked on the proposal, maps and project analysis together. We delegated the work right before working on the maps so that everyone is clear which part to work on. This is way more efficient than all three working on just one map together. Jassen worked on the first map while me and Vicky worked on the second map and we all three worked on the rest of the maps and the project analysis together.
Results
- 46 schools out of 184 schools in Surrey and Langley lie within the 15 minute walking parameters. Students who do not drive can take the skytrain to their school instead of being restricted to their mobility.
- Being able to access to the skytrain, people have one more alternative other than just taking buses or driving . Eventually, there will be less CO2 emissions released and an increase in the amount of physical activity.
- There will be less traffic congestions on the road with one more public transit alternative open to the surrey and Langley citizens.
Difficulties and Issues
- We could not find data for Langley City. But we did not want to have a hole in the middle of the map. At last we created a polygon in the shape of the city boundary.
- Not much issues when acquiring data. We were lucky enough to find what we need on the open data sources!
Tips
- If all the group members want to work on the same map, ask that group member logon to her account and leave the map on C:temp. The other  group mate then logon to her own account and work on that file and then save it H:drive afterwards. In this way, everyone can have a copy of the spatial data and the map.
- Support one another! Having a companion to work with is so important so that you can always seek advice from them and also ask for suggestions and help. We have to rely and trust your groupmates and have confidence in them!
- Do work during the lab sessions! The TAs are extremely helpful!
Accomplishment Statement
- Able to create a multi ring buffer so that we are able to analyze how many the skytrain benefits the Surrey and langley citizens.
- Learnt how to work collaboratively. This is my first group project in university and I learnt how important work delegation and co-operation are. These will make things more efficient!
